Special needs car seats and harnesses for children with additional needs
Finding the right car seat for a child with disabilities or additional needs takes expert guidance and specialist equipment. At In Car Safety Centre, we've spent over 40 years supporting families across the UK with tailored solutions for children who need more than a standard car seat.
Our range of special needs and disabled car seats includes options from birth to 36kg (around 11 to 12 years) and beyond, with enhanced postural support, 5-point harness systems, adjustable headrests and recline. Every child is different, so our trained team offers free specialist assessments and fitting to help you choose the right seat for your child, their needs and your vehicle. You can also send us an enquiry.

New to additional needs car seats? Our Additional Needs Car Seat Guide explains the options for families, councils, charities and professionals.
Disabled car seats for children up to 12 years and older
Many children with additional needs outgrow standard harnessed car seats long before they can safely use a booster and adult seatbelt. Our specialist seats are designed for older and larger children:
- Voyager Additional Needs Car Seat – enhanced support and a harness for children up to 36kg (around 11 to 12 years).
- IPAI-MINI and IPAI-MAX – R129-approved rehab seats with an optional swivel that rotates up to 90 degrees.
- KIDSFLEX R129 and KIDSFLEX Pro – rehabilitation seats for complex postural needs; the R129 edition comes in three sizes, up to 100kg.
5-point harness car seats and harnesses for older children
If your child unbuckles, climbs out of their seat or slips under the seatbelt, a 5-point harness keeps them secure. As well as harnessed special needs seats, we offer harnesses that work with a high back booster:
- Magnetic Harness – extra restraint for passengers who would otherwise open a normal buckle. Small, medium and large.
- Magnetic Harness with Axkid Nextkid high back booster – a front-fastening harness in a booster seat, for children who escape their car seats.
- Harness with Steel Buckles – a front-buckling harness for use in a high back booster.
- Push Button Harness – postural support and a degree of restraint to keep children and adults sitting upright.
For seats that already have a 5-point harness, a Buckle Cover or Chest Clip can stop children releasing it. See all additional needs accessories.
Is a 5-point harness safe for an older or larger child?
Yes, when the harness and seat are suitable for your child's size and fitted correctly. Our team will check the fit at a free assessment and show you how to use it every day.
What is the best car harness for a child who escapes?
It depends on how your child escapes. Children who open the buckle usually need a harness they can't release, like the Magnetic Harness. Children who wriggle out of the shoulder straps may need a different seat or harness. Book a free assessment and we'll help you find the right solution.
