Choosing the right booster seat for your child is one of the most important safety decisions you’ll make as a parent. With so many models and evolving safety standards like R129 (i-Size), it can feel overwhelming. In this guide we explain what makes a high-back booster safe, then compare four of the UK’s leading high-back booster seats — Axkid Nextkid, Avionaut MaxSpace AirFlow, BeSafe Flex FIX 2 and Joie i-Traver — to help you make an informed choice.
UK Booster Seat Law at a Glance
In the UK, children must use an appropriate child car seat until they are 12 years old or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first. After that, they must wear an adult seatbelt. High-back booster seats are designed for children from around 100 cm to 150 cm tall, positioning the seatbelt correctly across the child’s pelvis and shoulder. Read more in our guide to the booster seat law.
Types of child seat by age and height
| Child’s age / size | Recommended seat type |
|---|---|
| Birth – around 15 months (up to 13 kg) | Rear-facing infant car seat |
| Around 9 months – 4 years (up to 105 cm) | Harnessed seat — ideally extended rear-facing |
| From around 4 years (at least 18 kg / 100 cm) until 135 cm or 12 years | High-back booster seat |
High-back boosters are legally suitable from 15 kg (R44) or 100 cm (R129), but children can still be very small at 15 kg. At In Car Safety Centre we recommend a minimum of 18 kg, 100 cm and 4 years of age, and maxing out your child’s current seat first. High-Back Booster vs Backless Booster Cushion
High-back booster seat (preferred and safer)
- Supports the child’s head, neck and torso
- Guides the seatbelt into the correct position
- Provides side-impact protection
- Suitable for cars without rear headrests
Backless booster cushion
- Simply raises the child so the seatbelt reaches
- New models approved since 2017 are only for children over 22 kg and 125 cm
- Offers little or no side-impact protection
Even at 4 years old and beyond, children’s bodies are still developing and are far less resilient than an adult’s. That’s why we choose not to stock booster cushions. Find out more in our guide to high-back boosters vs cushions.
What Makes a High-Back Booster Safe?
1. Safety standard
Choose seats approved to R129 (i-Size) where possible. R129 is the newest, more rigorous regulation: it sizes seats by height rather than weight, and side-impact testing is mandatory. Learn more about i-Size regulations.
2. Head and side protection
The safest boosters offer good head protection and lateral support for the upper and lower body, often with energy-absorbing features that take impact forces away from your child.
3. Seatbelt positioning
The whole point of a booster is to position the adult seatbelt correctly. Look for clear belt guides that keep the shoulder belt across the middle of the shoulder and the lap belt low across the upper thighs — never across the stomach. A comfortable child is also more likely to keep the belt in the right place.
4. ISOFIX
We prefer high-back boosters with ISOFIX connectors. They hold the seat firmly in place, help stop it rotating in a side impact, and keep it secure even when your child isn’t in it.
5. Adjustability and comfort
An adjustable headrest and widening side wings let the seat grow with your child. Padding, breathable fabrics and recline options make long journeys easier — and a child who sleeps comfortably stays in a safer position.

Safety Tips for Using a High-Back Booster
- Install it properly: make sure ISOFIX connectors are securely attached, or that the seatbelt is threaded correctly through the belt guides.
- Check the fit every journey: the shoulder belt should lie flat across the chest and shoulder, and the lap belt across the upper thighs, not the stomach.
- Adjust as they grow: raise the headrest and belt guides regularly.
- Register your seat: register with the manufacturer so you hear about any recalls or safety updates.
- Keep it clean: choose removable, machine-washable covers for crumbs and spills.
