Over the years, there have been different opinions on this matter. Modern advice is to follow the 2-hour rule. I.e. a baby should not be in their infant carrier for more than 2 hours in any 24-hour period.
Why?
Because of the strain placed on a developing spine and the potential for the airflow to the baby’s lungs being restricted, when the head flops forward.
Have you heard of the 2-hour rule?
Don’t feel bad if you haven’t. A recent survey carried out suggests that less than half (58%) have heard of it – so you wouldn’t be alone.
This is why it is so important to let new mothers know this vital, life-saving information. Not following this rule can have serious implications.
Often parents don’t want to disturb their sleeping baby, who can end up infant carriers for extended periods. However, infant carriers are designed to be safe in an accident and not designed for babies to sleep in.
Over longer periods, a baby’s head can tilt forwards and restrict airflow. Therefore, a young baby must sleep on their back wherever possible.
